Synopsis
To exist you must be written down, and the one who writes eats the names as he cuts them.
Plot
It is not malice: it is his throat, and he has worked in good faith for forty years with no record left of anything. Here is where the rule's undoing is shown, long before it matters: over a turning platter a name does not count, so he does not eat it. What he wants, out loud before the forty eighth second: to be written down. What is not written down cannot even be thrown out.

The scribe, alone in the long room at night with one lamp and the record turning beside him, takes a blank plate and squares it in front of him. He cuts a groove over the turning record and swallows nothing: his throat holds still. A second plate with a groove goes onto the shelf beside the first one, and the two of them lean together.
Trivia and continuity
The price is paid by the scribe: the last thing he wrote was his own name. The first plate that comes out right stays on his shelf, and turns up again in episode 7, kept by the teacher as an example.
